Neoliberalism and the commercialization of the auditing profession: evidence from the private sector of auditing

Abstract :

Neoliberalism emphasizes on competition and privatization of economic activities and as a result on individual interests instead of public interests. In the school of neoliberalism, economic operators should maintain current customers and seek to attract new customers to maximize their benefits. The evidence in the Iranian audit market shows that the issue of retaining and also attracting clients is very important for audit firms. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to firstly examine auditors' perceptions of neoliberalism and secondly to examine the relationship between neoliberalism and its effect on the commercialization of the auditing profession. The statistical population of this sample study includes auditors working in private audit firms, and a sample of 129 was selected from this population. The data collection instrument is also a questionnaire. The hypothesis test is based on multivariate regression. The results of the research show that the tendency of auditors to commercialize the auditing profession is under the influence of neoliberalism and has a positive relationship with it. Also, the variables of gender, level of education, work experience, and being an official accountant of the auditor do not have a significant effect on the willingness of auditors to commercialize the auditing profession.
