The role of health anxiety, intrinsic motivation and sense of belonging to school in predicting academic and social adjustment in adolescent boys in Zanjan

Abstract :

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between health anxiety, intrinsic motivation and sense of belonging to school with academic and social adjustment in adolescent boys in Zanjan.Method: The method of this research was descriptive and correlational. The The statistical population of this study consisted of all high school students in Zanjan with an age range of 15_18 years who were studying in the academic year1400-1399 and among them 260 people were selected as a statistical sample through available sampling and They answered the questionnaires of feeling belonging to school Barry Bett et al.(2004), Sinha and Singh student adjustment(1993), internal motivation McIwley et al,(1991) And Health Anxiety Salkowski et al.'s(2002).Results: The results showed that health anxiety(r=401), intrinsic motivation(r=-465) and sense of belonging to school(r=-690) were significantly associated with academic adjustment. Also, health anxiety(r=405), intrinsic motivation(r=-306) and sense of belonging to school(r=-358) have a significant relationship with social adjustment. The results of multiple regression also showed that predictor variables have the ability to predict respectively 53% and 24% of academic and social adjustment.Conclusion: The results showed that health anxiety, intrinsic motivation and sense of belonging to school have the ability to predict academic and social adjustment. Therefore, it seems that by reducing health anxiety and increasing intrinsic motivation and sense of belonging to school can help increase the academic and social adjustment of adolescents.
