Abstract :
Abstract The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential consequences of using the internet on students’ educational status regarding their motivation and improvement of qualitative and quantitative dimensions of their education. The statistical population included all secondary school students of Tehran that totaled to 382000. Out of this number, 384 individuals were taken as the sample of the study by using Morgan’s table. The instrument of data collection was a researcher-made questionnaire including Young’s addiction questionnaire items to measure respondents’ addiction to the internet. Validity of the instrument was confirmed by experts. In order to measure the reliability, the questionnaire was piloted among 30 respondents which led to a Cronbach’s alpha index of 0.78. After the administration of the questionnaire to the study sample, statistical analyses were conducted by using one-way ANOVA and t-test. Results indicated that 63 percent of students were internet users while 37 percent were not. Also, pastime did not have any effect on students’ educational status and no relationship was observed between them. Additionally, internet users had a worsened educational condition (p= 0.51). Finally, Young’s addiction test demonstrated that about 64 percent of the students were normal, 27 percent were at the verge of addiction, and 7 percent were addicted to using the internet
