Elucidating the Philosophical Framework of Biophilic Architecture in Accordance with the Psychological Goals of Environmental Design

Abstract :

One of the most challenging interdisciplinary discussions in contemporary times is the relationship between nature and its philosophical foundations. Various interventions, sometimes crisis-inducing, stem from differing perspectives on nature—whether exploitative or custodial. In Islamic thought, the approach to nature and the environment is based on love and stewardship. The connection between divinity in nature and the spiritual elevation of the human soul has always been emphasized in Islam. Human essence, in proximity to nature, moves toward spiritual fulfillment. Despite this Islamic worldview that sees nature as a divine trust, modern humans have distanced themselves from the natural environment, leading to physical, psychological, and emotional issues.Biophilic design, connecting with nature, holds meaningful, symbolic, aesthetic, and identity-driven concepts. It is rooted in the cultural context and seeks to establish philosophical and scientific links between nature-based teachings and eco-friendly technologies. The goal of this research is to explain the environmental psychological model based on the positive feedback of coexistence with nature in biophilic design.The research is qualitative, utilizing a data-driven approach to assess the components under investigation. Data coding, based on foundational theories, was carried out in two stages—open and axial coding—using MAXQDA 10 software. Final concepts were selected based on commonalities and frequency. Considering causal conditions such as aesthetic dimensions, culture, identity, sustainability, and the symbolic nature of space, an environmental psychological model is proposed, incorporating justice, trust, and freedom, which ultimately leads to environmental resilience and well-being for users.
