Abstract :
Folk culture and literature are essential components of every nation's cultural and literary history. Key elements of folk literature include stories, fables, myths, beliefs, superstitions, lullabies, songs, Fahlaviyāt (a type of Persian poetry), proverbs, and riddles, which collectively form a significant part of a nation's culture and identity. Folk beliefs have exerted a substantial influence on classical literature and poetry. The belief in the "Evil Eye" is a prime example. This belief, which has been prevalent among various nations for a long time, is rooted in the idea of the evil eye being a curse inflicted by others. This belief is not limited to traditional Iranians and is common among Indians, Arabs, Greeks, Italians, European Americans, and others.
The term "evil eye" symbolizes malice and envy across many nations and tribes. Different cultures seek methods to counteract it according to their beliefs and perspectives. The belief in the evil eye is frequently depicted in Persian poetry collections. A study of poets’ divāns (poetry collections) revealed that the belief in the evil eye, despite its superstitious and folk-based nature, cannot be disregarded, particularly after considering Islamic verses and narratives.
