Abstract :

Given the unique climatic conditions of Isfahan and the locally available construction materials, bricks have historically been the primary material used in the construction of both public and private buildings. Bricks have not only been used in the load-bearing elements of structures, such as walls and roofs, but they have also played a significant role in decorative elements and flooring. This material has been highly valued by architects and builders over the centuries due to its specific properties, including its ability to transfer heat, high strength and durability, and malleability.Since the load-bearing parts of buildings, where bricks are used, are generally hidden under layers of façade, the exact dimensions of the bricks utilized are not easily observable. This has led many researchers to focus more on the aesthetic aspects of brickwork in facades, with less attention given to the technical dimensions and properties of the bricks used in the structural components of walls.In this context, this research aims, for the first time, to document and analyze the impact of brick dimensions and the presence or absence of mortar joints on the arrangement and pattern of walls in the historic houses of Isfahan. The primary objective of this study is to obtain precise information regarding the role of brick dimensions in determining wall thickness and their influence on the formation of various arrangement patterns.To achieve this goal, the study will begin with library research, along with documentary and field studies in the historic houses of Isfahan. Following this, detailed interviews will be conducted with skilled and experienced master builders in traditional architecture to analyze the process and methods of wall arrangement.The findings of this research indicate that architects used specific types of bricks with particular dimensions in the construction of walls in historic houses. In both complete and incomplete walls, a certain number and arrangement of bricks were commonly used. Furthermore, the presence or absence of mortar joints significantly influenced the form and pattern of wall arrangements.
