Social Commitment in Tehran: The Level and Factors Affecting It (a study among citizens over 18)

Abstract :

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the level of social commitment and identify the factors affecting it among Tehran citizens.

Method: This study was conducted with a quantitative approach and the statistical population included people over 18 years of age living in Tehran. The sample size was determined based on the Cochran formula, 385 people, and sampling was done using a multi-stage cluster method. Data were collected using a researcher-made and standard questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS software.

Findings: According to the presented regression coefficients, the independent variables of leisure time (0.51), cultural consumption (0.36), and social capital (0.19) have a significant effect on social commitment. Also, regression analysis showed that the social commitment prediction model with an R² coefficient of determination of 0.78 was able to explain a significant share of the variance of social commitment; so that leisure time, cultural consumption, and social capital have the greatest impact in this model, respectively.

Results: The results show that due to the prevailing social and cultural changes in Tehran, the level of social commitment has decreased even from the current (average) level and the tendency towards individualism and self-interested actions has been strengthened. In such circumstances, the necessity of redefining and reconstructing social bonds in the form of a system of mutual obligations is felt more than ever.
