Abstract :
Due to the need to identify and prioritize citizenship education issues for social policy, the present study uses a survey method and a questionnaire technique to assess these needs among 1,200 male and female citizens aged 15 and over living in 10 urban areas of Karaj. Findings indicated that in terms of the need for citizenship education, in terms of areas, citizens of Karaj are needed to education in all 10 areas of environment, transportation and traffic, culture, urban culture, Islamic and Iranian lifestyle, life skills, safety and crisis management, health and medicine, social pathologies, and mobile, internet and virtual networks. The most important areas were related to education in the fields of social pathologies, mobile, internet and virtual networks, environment and life skills, respectively. In terms of dimensions of citizenship education, the educational need was high in all four dimensions of values and citizenship rights, citizenship ethics, social commitment and responsibility, and local, national and international affiliation, but in the dimension of civic participation, the need was low. The dimension of citizenship values and rights was the most important dimension in this regard, and the dimensions of citizenship ethics, local, national and international affiliation, and social commitment and responsibility were in the next order, respectively. Findings indicates the multiplicity of citizenship education needs, the diverse pattern of citizenship education needs, the hegemony of Iranian identity, the hegemony of local and national citizenship, and the lack of global citizenship, and the lack of active citizenship among the citizens of Karaj.
