Poverty and Human Development: Evidences from Iran and Selected Developing Countries

Abstract :
One of the most important objectives of governments is the improvement of development dimensions. In this way the role of human development can be very important. The most important factor in human development is individuals in that society, because they are both the aim and mean of development. This has led to special attention that the world and international organizations take into consideration and identify factors affecting human development. This paper seeks to identify the impact of poverty as a problem of societies on the human development indices. In modern economy, poverty reduction policies can influence the components of education, health, and.... In this paper, in addition to poverty index, the impact of intellectual capital index, per capita income, public educational and health costs on the human development Index are studied. 9 selected developing countries, including Iran, have been analyzed over the period 2001-2010. In order to estimate the parameters of the specified model, panel cointegration techniques with the method of dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) has been employed. The empirical results show the negative impact of poverty on human development index, but the index of intellectual capital, per capita income, public spending on education and health have the positive effects on the human development index.
